The murder of women is neither a new phenomenon nor a topic of historical research that has garnered a large body of research. In this essay, Ryan Bailey Patterson, University of Oregon ’16, delves into the topic of feminicide, studying the gendered contexts of the murder of women in terms of pervasive patriarchal power structures. Patterson focuses much of her analysis on the feminicides of Ciudad Juárez, looking at the role of politicized visual art in combatting the troubling trend.
