Is the United States guilty of genocide against Native Americans? What definition of genocide should we use to answer this question? Since there are 5 million Native Americans today, how can they have been the victims of genocide? In this pub talk, Professor Jeffrey Ostler addresses these and other challenging questions about genocide in American history. His goal is not to provide easy answers but to encourage an informed conversation.
Dr. Ostler is the Beekman Professor of Northwest and Pacific History. He specializes in the history of the American West, with a particular focus on American Indian history. He is the author of Prairie Populism: The Fate of Agrarian Radicalism in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, 1880-1892, The Plains Sioux and U.S. Colonialism from Lewis and Clark to Wounded Knee, and The Lakotas and The Black Hills. He is currently completing a book manuscript on The Destruction and Survival of American Indian Nations, 1754-1900.
