Abstract:

The Indian Removal Act of 1830 supposedly initiated the U.S. policy of removing Indigenous people in the eastern United States west of the Mississippi, but the policy had much deeper roots. Removal was also far more damaging than we have appreciated.  Not only did it adversely impact Native nations in the east who were removed (in some cases more than once), but it also affected nations whose homelands were in the “zone of removal” west of the Mississippi.
