Historical Horizons Fellowship

The Department of History is thrilled to announce the second year of the Historical Horizons fellowship, which will be offered to two incoming master of arts (MA) students in the entering class of academic year 2023-24.

Award

The Historical Horizons fellowship at UO includes:

A $5,000 award in each of the recipient’s first and second academic years, for a total of $10,000
Guaranteed assignment as a Graduate Employee (eg. teaching assistant or grader) for both years of the MA program. All GEs receive a full-time tuition waiver, mandatory fees subsidy, and subsidized health insurance premiums, including coverage for eligible dependents. In 2020-21, the GE salary for MA students in history was $13,329 for the academic year.
Additionally, each Historical Horizons fellow will be assigned a mentor who is a more advanced graduate student in our or another department. The mentor will be compensated to meet with the Fellow monthly during the academic year over their time in the program.
The History Department will also facilitate Historical Horizons Fellows’ connection to the many additional support resources on the UO campus for first-generation and underrepresented students.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Historical Horizons fellowship, you must:

be a first-generation college student and/or be from a group under-represented in academia
be an applicant to our MA program, or an applicant to our PhD program but willing to accept an MA offer if you are not admitted to the PhD program
U.S. citizenship is not a requirement

Application Instructions

Follow the usual prospective student instructions to apply to the history graduate program by the annual deadline
If you are a PhD applicant, be sure to check the box saying you are willing to accept admission to the MA if you are not admitted to the PhD program
The graduate school offers several types of waivers of the $90 application fee, such as for McNair Scholars and low-income students, among others
On the Gradweb application in the Department Application section, you will be prompted to fill out a supplementary statement section to be considered for the Historical Horizons fellowship. The prompt for the supplementary statement on the application is as follows:

In 500–1,000 words, please discuss the barriers that you have overcome in pursuit of higher education (educational, social, cultural, economic, related to disability status, and/or related to dependent care responsibilities); your demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and the advancement of underrepresented and/or first generation communities; and how you can contribute to the creation of a diverse and inclusive department and university.
