Graduation vs. Commencement

Graduation

The completion of all your degree requirements and subsequent awarding of your degree.  This can happen at the end of any term of study.

When do I apply for graduation?
No later than week 4 of your last term of classes. You may also apply up to a year in advance if you know when you’ll be done.

Deadline to apply for graduation:
The Sunday at the end of the 4th week of your final term.

What if you miss the deadline?
If you miss the 4th week deadline, you can still apply! However, DuckWeb will no longer allow you to apply for graduation online; students must visit the Registrar’s Office and file a late petition.

How do you apply for graduation?
Log onto DuckWeb, go to the Student Menu tab, and click on “Apply for Undergraduate Degree”.  You can also check your application status on the same page if you think you have already applied.

I submitted an application to graduate, but found out I need to stay for 1 or 2 more terms. What should I do?
Contact the Registrar’s Office to pull your application.  It is important to do this, because if you don’t, your ability to register for classes will be impacted.

Commencement

The ceremony at which you wear a cap and gown, have your name announced as you cross a stage, and shake the department head’s hand.  This only happens in June.

When and where is Sociology’s 2021 Commencement Ceremony?
The Department of Sociology will participate in the College of Arts and Sciences Social Science division ceremony. This will be a virtual ceremony featuring a celebratory video recognizing individual students and will be available following the main UO celebration on June 12, 2021 at 9 AM PDT. Visit commencement.uoregon.edu to learn more about the virtual events for commencement 2021.

Where do I sign up for Sociology’s Commencement Ceremony?
There will be a form to fill out online, and the link and information will be sent to eligible graduates by the Division of Student life to your UO email. If you believe you’re eligible to graduate but have not received an email by April 30, 2021, please email Nena Pratt in the Sociology office.

What if I apply for my degree in a term other than Spring term?

You’re still invited to the commencement ceremony in June. Students that graduated or applied to graduate in the current academic year (Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer) are automatically invited to participate.

What if I will be done next Fall, but want to participate in this June’s commencement ceremony?
You can! Just contact Nena Pratt early during Spring term and let her know you would like to participate.
