The Sociology Honors Program provides qualified students with the opportunity to write an honors thesis by working closely with faculty members and fellow honors students on a year-long research project of their own design. This program is highly encouraged to students who plan to pursue advanced training in sociology, are interested in direct applications of sociology, or simply desire a more challenging academic experience.

Students who successfully complete the honors program are awarded honors or high honors and the honors distinction (but not the level) will be noted on the student’s official transcript and diploma.

Requirements

Applicants to the honors program must demonstrate a high level of competence and motivation for advanced studies in sociology.

• GPA no lower than 3.40 in sociology courses OR
• Nomination by 2 faculty members

Students should apply during the spring term prior to their junior or senior year. The deadline to apply is April 29, 2016.

Honors Program

During fall and winter terms of their junior or senior year, honors students take part in the honors seminar (SOC 407), in which they work closely with a professor and other students to refine research questions and design. By the end of fall each student submits a thesis proposal for approval. During winter and spring terms, students work with their professor and proceed with data collection and analysis. Students complete and submit their theses during the spring term.

The twelve credits of the Honors Program are arranged as follows:

Fall

• Two graded credits of SOC 407 Honors Thesis Preparation
• One to three P/N credits of SOC 403 Honors Thesis

Winter

• Two graded credits of SOC 407 Honors Thesis Preparation
• One to three P/N credits of SOC 403 Honors Thesis (SOC 403 credits for fall and winter together must equal four credits)

Spring:

• Four graded credits of SOC 403 Honors Thesis
